The community

Millville at a glance

Millville is older than its neighbor. One resident in five here is 65 or over: 20.2%, about 5,561 people out of 27,511, against 17.2% statewide, and the median age is 44.4. Only 5.6% of residents have no health insurance, a lower share than in Vineland or Cumberland County overall.

The city sits on the Maurice River, which the city says is navigable to its center, about 45 miles from Philadelphia. For Medicare that distance matters: specialists and the larger hospital systems are a drive away, so the network question deserves more time than the premium.

How did Millville get its name?

The city says it was born at what is now Union Lake. In 1776 Joseph Smith and others formed the Union Estates Company and bought 24,000 acres; Captain Joseph Buck drew the town plans in 1795, and the name comes from the mills and factories planned there in the 1790s. Millville became a township in 1801 and a city in 1866, and South Jersey’s silica sand gave rise to its glass industry. Since 1913 it has been run by five elected commissioners, one of whom serves as mayor.

What does Millville offer older residents?

The Millville Senior Center at 1500 South 2nd Street is open Tuesday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except holidays (director, 856-825-7000, extension 7391). If you need a ride there, the city points you to CATS, the county’s transit system (856-691-7799, two days ahead). The county’s congregate lunch for Millville seniors is served at High Rise East (856-825-8779).

Residents 65 and over, or permanently and totally disabled, with income under $10,000 not counting Social Security can claim a $250 yearly property tax deduction at the Tax Office, 12 South High Street.

Veterans

VA coverage and no-drug Advantage plans in Millville

CATS lists veterans among the riders it carries, and many Millville veterans already get prescriptions through the VA. If your VA drug coverage is creditable, meaning Medicare counts it as at least as good as standard Part D, a Medicare Advantage plan without drugs can sit alongside it.

Two cautions. Your VA eligibility can change, and if you later drop creditable coverage you may owe a Part D penalty. And a VA pharmacy is not a plan network pharmacy: civilian specialists and the hospital still need to be in the Advantage plan’s network.

What to compare between the no-drug plans

Look at the out-of-pocket limit, the giveback amount if any, and whether the plan is an HMO-POS, which mostly keeps you in network, or a PPO, which pays something outside it. Jackie lays those side by side with your doctors.

Why this matters for plan choice

Of the conditions above where Millville reads higher than the New Jersey county average, high blood pressure, diagnosed diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and high cholesterol are among those a chronic-condition Special Needs Plan can cover. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Cumberland County list are built around: Cardiovascular Disorders; Chronic Heart Failure; Diabetes Mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

How the figures are derived

Headline counts and averages leave out Special Needs Plans. "$0 Part C premium" and "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" are counted separately; out-of-pocket limits are in-network. The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included. Where the crosswalk ends a plan but the same company files a similar plan under a new ID, we say so. We never estimate per-plan enrollment.
