Among the standard plans that are renewing, the average in-network out-of-pocket maximum moves from $8,196 in 2026 to $9,067 in 2027.

None of that means your plan is wrong for you. It means this is a year to check, not a year to coast. Open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, and whatever you choose starts January 1, 2027.

Step 1: What should I read first?

Your Annual Notice of Change. Every Medicare Advantage and Part D plan sends one by September 30. It lists what changes on January 1, 2027, side by side with this year.

  • Monthly premium, on top of the Part B premium ($202.90 a month in 2026).
  • In-network out-of-pocket maximum, your worst-case yearly cost for covered medical care.
  • Hospital and specialist copays. Inpatient copays are often charged per day.
  • Drug deductible and tiers for each of your prescriptions.
  • Extras you use: dental, vision, hearing and over-the-counter allowances.

Step 2: Are my doctors and drugs still covered?

Check every doctor and every prescription against the plan's 2027 lists, not this year's. Networks and drug lists change on January 1, and the 2027 versions are the only ones that tell you what will happen.

  1. List your doctors, including specialists and your preferred hospital. Search each one by name in the plan's 2027 provider directory, and ask the office to confirm.
  2. List your prescriptions with the dose. Look up each one on the 2027 drug list and note the tier and any prior authorization.
  3. Name your pharmacy. Preferred pharmacies can mean lower copays.
  4. Note what changed. That short list is what you compare against other plans.

Step 3: What is my worst-case cost for 2027?

Add 12 months of plan premium to the plan's in-network out-of-pocket maximum. That is your ceiling for covered medical care in a bad year. In Camden County, 2027 maximums for standard plans run from $6,900 to $9,850, with a median of $9,525. Drug costs are capped separately at $2,400 for 2027.

Average in-network out-of-pocket maximum by plan type, Camden County, 2027
  • HMO9,558$ per year$9,558
  • HMO-POS8,100$ per year$8,100
  • PPO9,235$ per year$9,235
  • Regional PPO9,850$ per year$9,850

A higher maximum matters most if you expect surgery, a hospital stay or ongoing treatment. If you do, look closely at the plan's inpatient copays, and ask whether a Medicare Supplement or a hospital indemnity plan belongs in the conversation.

Step 4: Are $0 premium plans worth a look?

They can be, as long as the rest of the plan fits. 17 of the 34 standard Camden County plans have no monthly plan premium for 2027. A $0 premium plan still has copays, a drug deductible (18 of the 34 standard plans use the full $700 drug deductible for 2027) and an out-of-pocket maximum, and you keep paying Part B.

Questions for a $0 premium plan

  • What is the out-of-pocket maximum?
  • What is the daily hospital copay?
  • Are my doctors in the 2027 network?
  • What tier are my drugs on?

Questions for a plan with a premium

  • What do I get for the premium: a lower maximum, lower copays, a broader network?
  • How much is the drug deductible?
  • Would a Medigap plan cost about the same?
  • Does it cover the extras I use?

If you have Medicare and NJ FamilyCare, or a chronic condition such as diabetes or heart failure, ask about Special Needs Plans. Camden County has 13 of them for 2027 (5 for people with Medicare and Medicaid, 5 for chronic conditions and 3 for people living in a facility), counted separately from the 34 above.

Step 5: How do I compare and enroll before December 7?

Narrow it to two or three plans that cover your doctors and drugs, compare the yearly total, then enroll by December 7, 2026. Joining a new plan ends your old one automatically on January 1.
